Nov 4, 2026: the user plan starts to pay
Duolingo closed Nov 3 at $128.00, down 5.4% that day and near the bottom of a range it had held since September. It reported after the close and hosted a video webcast at 5pm ET. Premarket trading ranged from $142 to $161. The stock opened at $161.75, made its low of $157.00 at 9:30am and climbed to $175.56 at 10:15am. At 11:48am it was $169.57, up 32.5%, on about 3.9 million shares. Schaeffer's said the stock was on track for its best day since May 2022.
What moved the stock:
- Users grew faster again. Daily active users rose 29% to 64.9 million, and monthly users rose 13% to 153.1 million. Chief executive Luis von Ahn wrote that partnerships with the games Brawl Stars and Eggy Party "brought us millions of new and returning users."
- Bookings followed. Total bookings rose 12% to $316.1 million, four points faster than in the second quarter, and subscription bookings rose 16% to $278.4 million.
- The guide went up. The company now expects full-year bookings of $1.296 billion and revenue of $1.221 billion, the top of its February ranges, and fourth-quarter bookings slightly ahead of what its old full-year outlook implied.
- Analysts and short sellers moved. At least nine analysts raised their targets, and Wells Fargo upgraded the stock to equal weight with a $120 target, up from $80, Schaeffer's reported. Before the report the 10-day put/call volume ratio was 1.49, in the 100th percentile of its annual range, so many traders were positioned for a drop.
At 11:46am RSI(14) stood at 66, the shares sat 17.5% above their 50-day average and 37.7% above their 200-day average, volume was 4.1 times its 20-day average, and the stock was 36.6% below its 52-week high. The rest of the session's movers are in today's biggest stock moves.

Gross margin rose to 72.9% from 72.5% because AI costs per feature fell. Net income was $27.2 million, against $292.2 million a year earlier, when a $222.7 million tax benefit inflated the result. Duolingo ended the quarter with $1.4 billion of cash and short-term investments and had bought back 781,439 shares for $82.0 million through Oct 30 under its $400 million program. Our guide to guidance changes explains why a raise to the top of a range can matter more than the quarter itself.
The bull case
Duolingo spent 2026 putting user growth ahead of near-term profit, and the third quarter is the first one where that shows up in bookings. Most subscriptions run 12 months and are recognized over the plan, so faster bookings now point to faster revenue in 2027. The company also plans to give all Super subscribers unlimited Video Call, its AI speaking practice, by year end, and it is retiring the Max tier, which simplifies the offer. With $1.4 billion of cash and a buyback that has offset two years of dilution, the balance sheet is not a constraint. Our page on post-earnings announcement drift covers why stocks that gap up on a clear change in the numbers often keep moving in the same direction.
The risks
Payers are the weak spot. Paid subscribers grew 14%, half the pace of users, and the game partnerships that brought in new users may bring in fewer who pay. The margin is also lower: adjusted EBITDA fell even as revenue rose 14%, and the company expects gross margin to dip to 72.0% in the fourth quarter as it rolls out more AI features.
The stock has also moved past most of the Street. The average target is about $140 and the highest is $180, so further gains need estimate increases, which our guide to earnings estimate revisions explains. Law firms announced class action suits against the company on Nov 4, a cost and a distraction. Our explainer on short interest and squeezes covers how much of a jump like this can come from bearish positioning unwinding.
What comes next
The fourth-quarter report is expected around February 25, 2027, with the 2027 outlook. Before then, watch for further analyst target changes, any update on the bonus target of 25% daily user growth, and whether the stock holds the $157 low it set at the open. A close below that level would undercut the Bullish case.
