Oct 20, 2026: an aluminum miss knocks Steel Dynamics 5% before the open
The results came out after the close on Oct 19. The stock traded as low as $222.88 in thin after-hours trading shortly after the release and settled near $232 by early evening. Before the open on Oct 20 it traded at $230.11 at 4:25am and $229.40 at 5am, then firmed to $233.80 by 8:30am and held there at 8:47am, down 4.6%. TIKR put the after-hours drop at about 5.5%.
What pushed it down:
- It missed its own guide. The $5.26 compares with the $5.34 to $5.38 range from Sep 17. The Zacks estimate cited by the AP was $5.42, and the consensus was $5.48. When the guide came out in September, Investing.com reported, it was already below a $5.60 consensus.
- Aluminum fell short again. The company said volumes "were less than expected over a number of weeks, as yield losses increased at higher operating speeds." In September it had said aluminum earnings would improve meaningfully. The segment lost $26 million, better than the $33 million loss of the second quarter, but not the step up investors had been told to expect.
- Mill volumes were light too. Goldman Sachs said lower than expected shipments in aluminum and at the mills "drove the bottom line miss," Investing.com reported. It put the adjusted EBITDA margin at 18.3%, against an 18.9% consensus.
- Recycling slipped. Metals recycling earned $33 million, down from $48 million, on lower scrap prices and narrower spreads.
What limited the damage:
- The steel quarter was a record. Shipments were 3.78 million tons, the average external selling price was $1,400 a ton, up $102 from the second quarter, and scrap cost per ton melted fell $8 to $404.
- The fix is named. The company said the cause "originated from the hot strip mill rolling coolant composition, which has been successfully changed," and that "the mill performance has been excellent in October."
- Goldman held its rating. It reiterated Buy with a $299 target, noting that aluminum reached EBITDA breakeven in the quarter.
Peers were mostly flat to lower before the open. At their latest premarket trades, Nucor was down 1.3% at 7:36am, Cleveland-Cliffs was down 2.1% at 8:49am after its 15% gain, and ArcelorMittal was down 0.7%. Steel Dynamics fell more than twice as much as any of them, so most of the move is company news. Our page of today's biggest stock moves covers other names reacting to results.
Going into the session, from the Oct 19 close, RSI(14) stood at 59, the shares sat 2.6% above their 50-day average and 11% above their 200-day average, volume on Oct 19 ran 1.8 times its 20-day average, and the stock was 15% below its 52-week high of $288.74.
The numbers
| Measure | Q3 2025 | Q2 2026 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $4.83B | $6.09B | $6.51B |
| Operating income | $508M | $700M | $1.01B |
| Net income | $404M | $534M | $756M |
| Diluted EPS | $2.74 | $3.69 | $5.26 |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $664M | $921M | $1.19B |
| Steel price, per ton | $1,119 | $1,298 | $1,400 |
Against the guide and the estimates, the miss looks like this:
Segment operating income tells the same story. Steel rose to $1.03 billion from $721 million. Steel fabrication rose to $91 million from $85 million on 18% higher shipments. Metals recycling fell to $33 million from $48 million. Aluminum lost $26 million, against $33 million in the second quarter. Steel's metal spread, the average price less scrap cost, widened to $996 a ton from $886.
Cash flow was steady. Operating cash flow was $846 million, the company bought back $276 million of stock, about 1% of its shares, and paid $76 million of dividends. Year to date it has repurchased $591 million, the kind of steady return we cover in buybacks as catalysts. Liquidity was $2.4 billion at Sep 30.
The case for the stock
The core business is earning more than it ever has. Steel operating income of $1.03 billion is more than double the $498 million of a year ago, on higher prices and record volume. The fabrication backlog is 50% higher than a year ago and runs into the second quarter of 2027, which gives that business visible work well into next year.
Aluminum is the swing factor, and the company now says the problem is behind it. All three cold mills are running, the first of two CASH lines is operating and is due to ship finished automotive products before year end, and the second is due to run in early 2027. Management said it expects aluminum volumes and profitability to improve in the fourth quarter and through 2027. A segment that went from a $57 million loss a year ago to EBITDA breakeven is moving in the right direction, if more slowly than promised.
The price already reflects a lot of caution. The forward P/E is 10.7, the price-to-sales ratio is 1.5, and the consensus price target is $273, about 17% above the premarket price. For how to read a forward multiple against a trailing one in a cyclical business, see forward P/E versus trailing P/E.
The risks
- Credibility on aluminum. In July the company expected positive aluminum earnings in the second half, TIKR noted, and in September it guided to a meaningful improvement. Two slips in a row make the next guide matter more than usual. Our explainer on why guidance changes move stocks covers why the market punishes a missed company guide more than a missed estimate.
- Steel prices. The quarter rode a $102 a ton price gain. The company itself noted that more domestic steel and aluminum capacity may enter the market in the coming years.
- A high bar for the fourth quarter. Analysts expect $5.92 a share, above this quarter's $5.26, which needs both aluminum and steel prices to hold up.
- The cycle. Steel earnings swing with prices and scrap costs, and a multiple of 11 times can rise quickly if earnings fall. See what makes a value trap for the signs of a cheap stock that stays cheap.
What comes next
- The earnings call, Oct 20 at 11am ET. Listen for October aluminum shipments, the timing of the second CASH line and any word on fourth-quarter steel pricing.
- A fourth-quarter guide. The company gave its third-quarter range on Sep 17. A similar release in December would show whether aluminum turned a profit.
- Nucor's results on Oct 26. TIKR notes Nucor reports against its own $5.55 to $5.65 guide, a read on how the rest of the industry closed the quarter.
- Fourth-quarter results, expected around January 25, 2027. Our guide to preparing for an earnings report lays out what to check on the day.
