Oct 20, 2026: a small beat, a trimmed outlook and a 9% premarket drop
The company released results at 6:55am. A premarket trade at 6:55am printed at $127.04, down 2.4%. Selling picked up after 7:30am: the stock traded at $124.50 at 7:33am and $122.00 at 7:34am, down 6.3%. Investing.com had it down 7.6% before the open. By 8:48am the last trade was $118.45, down 9.0%, with the bid at $118.45 and the ask at $119.00 at 8:51am. A trade at 8:56am printed at $119.30, down 8.4%. Management held its conference call at 8:30am. The stock had already slipped 2.8% on Oct 19, from $133.96, its highest close since early September.
What pushed it down:
- The top of the range came off. The $0.25 cut to the high end leaves a $7.625 midpoint, below the $7.74 consensus. Investing.com called the narrowing the main cause of the selloff. The release said only that the company "considered its recent business trends and financial results" along with the economic outlook and "geopolitical conflicts."
- The core auto business lost ground. North America Automotive sales rose 2.2%, with comparable sales up 1.7%, but segment EBITDA fell to $194 million from $200 million.
- Costs grew faster than sales. Adjusted SG&A rose to 29.5% of sales from 28.8%, which offset a gross margin that improved to 38.1% from 37.4%.
What held up:
- The quarter beat. Adjusted EPS rose 4.5% from $1.98, and sales grew 4.2%.
- Cash flow. Nine-month operating cash flow was $817 million, against $511 million a year earlier.
- Peers did not follow. At around 8:50am, from the Oct 19 close:
| Stock or fund | Oct 19 close | Premarket, Oct 20 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastenal (FAST) | $51.02 | $51.50 | +0.9% |
| AutoZone (AZO) | $3,097.88 | $3,112.00 | +0.5% |
| O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) | $89.07 | $89.36 | +0.3% |
| LKQ (LKQ) | $21.52 | $21.51 | 0.0% |
| SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) | $766.48 | $765.46 | -0.1% |
| Advance Auto Parts (AAP) | $43.70 | $42.89 | -1.8% |
| Genuine Parts (GPC) | $130.18 | $118.45 | -9.0% |
The drop is specific to Genuine Parts. Auto parts retailers and the industrial distributor Fastenal were flat to higher, so the market is pricing the guidance, not the sector. More of today's biggest stock moves are on our market page.
Before the report, RSI(14) stood at 50 at the Oct 19 close and volume that day ran 1.8 times its 20-day average; at $118.45 the shares sat 10% below their 50-day average of $132.04, 1% below their 200-day average of $120.13 and 22% below their 52-week high of $151.57.
The numbers
| Segment | Q3 sales | Sales growth | Segment EBITDA | EBITDA change | EBITDA margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| North America Automotive | $2.54B | +2.2% | $194M | -2.9% | 7.6%, down 40 bps |
| International Automotive | $1.57B | +4.5% | $141M | +4.7% | 9.0%, flat |
| Industrial | $2.41B | +6.1% | $317M | +11.2% | 13.2%, up 60 bps |
The guidance change matters most for the fourth quarter. Adjusted EPS through September was $5.99, so the new range implies $1.51 to $1.76 for the last three months, about $1.64 at the midpoint. The $7.74 consensus implied about $1.75. Last year's fourth quarter was $1.55.
So the midpoint still implies growth of about 5% on last year, but roughly $0.11 a share less than analysts had. Our explainer on why guidance changes move stocks covers why a trimmed range often hurts more than a small beat helps.
GAAP figures are lower because of charges. Third-quarter adjustments totaled $86.6 million before tax, or $0.45 a share, including $64.5 million of restructuring and $21.2 million of separation costs.
The case for the stock
- The reaction is larger than the change. At the prior close the company was worth about $17.9 billion. A 9% drop takes about $1.6 billion off that value, while the $0.125 cut to the midpoint is about $17 million of annual earnings on roughly 138 million shares.
- Cash flow is improving. Free cash flow of $502 million in nine months compares with $160 million a year earlier, and covers the $434 million paid in dividends. The quarterly dividend is $1.0625 a share, up from $1.03.
- Industrial is the stronger half. Industrial sales grew 6.1% with comparable sales up 5.5%. When it becomes Motion, investors can value it on its own, which is the point of a spin-off. A sum-of-the-parts valuation is how analysts will frame that split.
- Valuation is lower. The shares trade at 15.5 times the new 2026 midpoint and about 14.2 times the $8.32 consensus for 2027, before any estimate cuts. Our note on forward against trailing P/E explains why the forward figure matters here. The average analyst price target is $145.75.
The risks
- North America Automotive is the business that stays as GPC. Its margin fell while sales grew, and the company gave no reason in the release. If the fourth quarter shows a second decline, the remaining company looks weaker than the combined one.
- Charges keep running. Restructuring costs reached $193.4 million through September, up from $167.3 million a year earlier, and separation costs added $54.9 million.
- Borrowing is up. Long-term debt rose to $4.47 billion from $3.50 billion at the end of 2025, while short-term borrowings fell to $388 million from $944 million. Inventory rose to $6.44 billion from $6.07 billion.
- Outlooks have disappointed before. The stock fell 14.6% on February 17, 2026, when the company gave its first 2026 outlook and announced the split. UBS rates it Neutral with a $122 target, Investing.com reported.
- Estimates may fall. Analysts are likely to trim their 2026 and 2027 forecasts after the narrowed range, which would lift the multiple at today's price.
What comes next
- The rest of today's session. A premarket price on thin volume can move a long way at the open. The low end of the range was kept, so the size of the drop by the close will show how much of the cut the market had expected.
- Separation filings. The registration for Motion will show how debt and costs are split between the two companies. Our guide to Form 10 filings covers what to check.
- Fourth-quarter results, expected in mid-February 2027. Watch adjusted EPS against the $1.51 to $1.76 implied range, the North America Automotive margin and the first 2027 outlooks for each company. Our guide to preparing for an earnings report explains what moves a stock on the day.
- The separation itself, targeted for the first quarter of 2027. A delay would be the clearest sign the plan has run into trouble.
