Oct 28, 2026: a gap lower, then a second leg down
LPL reported after the close on Oct 27 and fell 3.0% in after-hours trading to about $308, Investing.com reported. It opened premarket trading at $304.03 and slipped to $294.79 by 8:05am. It opened the regular session at $294.17, touched $297.27 in the first minutes, then sold off to $270.17 at 10:40am, down 14.9% and about 4% above its $260.15 52-week low. At 11:51am it was $276.40 on 2.04 million shares.
What pushed it down:
- The retention cut. CEO Rich Steinmeier said LPL now expects to retain "approximately 83%" of Commonwealth assets, against the roughly 90% it underwrote. Audette said about 85% of advisors who had signed were on board last quarter and a small number then decided not to stay. StockStory tied the morning's 12.5% drop to the lower forecast and softer near-term inflows.
- Slower growth. Audette said he would "expect October organic growth to be in the zone of 3%," noting October is usually the weakest month. Third-quarter organic net new assets were $29.1 billion, a 4.5% annualized rate, and Wolfe Research analyst Steven Chubak asked whether growth can sustainably reach mid-single digits after September came in below 4%.
- Recruiting has cooled. Recruited assets were $24 billion, down 26% from a year earlier, and $81 billion over twelve months. Analysts from Barclays, William Blair and TD Cowen asked about competitive transition assistance and retention bonuses at rival firms.
- Less client cash. Cash balances were $56.6 billion at Sept. 30, and Audette estimated October at about $55.5 billion. Cash sweep income is one of LPL's most profitable lines.

The quarter itself was solid, and Steinmeier called it "another quarter of strong business performance and excellent financial results." Core G&A guidance for 2026 was narrowed to $2.14 billion to $2.16 billion, and leverage stood at 1.93 times. The problem is what the call said about the next few months, not what the release said about the last three. Our page on why guidance changes move stocks covers that pattern, and our explainer on earnings estimate revisions covers what happens when analysts follow.
The bull case
- Low multiple. About 9.1 times 2027 estimates and 11.8 times 2026; see our page on forward and trailing P/E.
- The deal target held. LPL kept its goal of about $415 million of run-rate EBITDA from Commonwealth by the fourth quarter of 2027.
- Buybacks. $301 million in the third quarter, with leverage below 2 times; our page on buybacks as catalysts explains when that matters.
- Advisory is still growing fast. Advisory organic net new assets grew at an 8.5% annualized rate.
The risks
- The conversion. More advisors could leave around the move itself, and a 7-point retention cut in weeks shows how fast the number can change.
- Competition for advisors. Rivals are paying more to recruit and to keep advisors, which raises LPL's own costs to win new ones.
- Rate-sensitive cash income. The Fed's rate decision on Oct 28 and lower client cash both bear on sweep revenue.
- Estimate cuts. The 2026 and 2027 averages may not yet reflect the retention cut.
What comes next
- The Commonwealth conversion in mid-November. Watch for any update to the 83% figure once advisors are on the platform.
- Monthly metrics. LPL's October and November asset and flow figures will show whether organic growth recovers from the 3% October pace.
- Analyst revisions. If 2027 estimates fall well below $30, the low multiple will not hold.
