Nov 2, 2026: a rival approval and a 24% drop
The selling started early. Precigen traded at $5.67 at 6:05am and fell to $4.73 by 7:50am, then recovered to open at $5.32. It touched $4.91 in the first minutes of regular trading, rebounded, and was $5.30 at 12:15pm on about 8.5 million shares, 1.7 times the 20-day average. Inovio, a far smaller company, traded at about $2.00, up roughly 232%.
What happened:
- The approval. On Oct 30 the FDA granted accelerated approval to Voceryq, previously called INO-3107, to reduce the frequency of surgery in adults with RRP. Inovio called it the first FDA-approved DNA medicine.
- The data. Of 26 patients in Inovio's efficacy group, 7 (27%) had a complete response, meaning no surgery in the 12 months after treatment.
- The timeline. Inovio expects Voceryq to be available to order and ship in about 60 days, with a full commercial launch in the first quarter of 2027.
- The fine print. Continued approval may depend on a confirmatory study, as with most accelerated approvals.
After the drop, RSI(14) stood at 33, near oversold. The shares sat 26% below their 50-day average and almost exactly on their 200-day average of $5.28, and 41% below the 52-week high of $8.98. The stock had already fallen from $8.56 at the end of September before this news.
How the two drugs compare
Both drugs aim to cut the number of surgeries RRP patients need to clear growths from their airways. The response data favor Papzimeos clearly, though the trials were separate and enrolled different groups.
| Papzimeos (Precigen) | Voceryq (Inovio) | |
|---|---|---|
| No surgery for 12 months | 51% | 27% |
| Dosing | 4 doses over 12 weeks | 4 doses over 9 weeks |
| Surgery during dosing | Before dose 1, and before doses 3 and 4 if growths return | Before dose 1 only |
| On the market | More than a year | Ships in about 60 days |
Voceryq's case is convenience. After one surgery before the first dose, patients need no more during its dosing window, which some doctors and patients may prefer. Papzimeos' case is that it works for about twice as many patients, based on the data so far. Our guide to regulatory approvals as catalysts explains why a rival's approval often hits a stock harder on the day than it does on the sales line later.
What was priced in
Going into Monday, analysts expected Papzimeos to take Precigen's revenue from $9.7 million in 2025 to $236 million in 2026 and $437 million in 2027. Second-quarter revenue was $55.0 million, and analysts expect about $71.6 million for the third quarter. At Friday's close Precigen traded at about 7.8 times forward sales, well below its five-year average of about 29 times, according to TIKR. The drop takes that multiple lower still.
Papzimeos' orphan drug exclusivity runs to August 2032, but it only blocks the same drug for the same use. It did not keep out a different product. Short sellers held about 28% of the float before the news, so they had positioned for a fall.
The case for the stock
- Better data. A 51% complete response rate against 27% gives Papzimeos a clear efficacy edge, even allowing for the separate trials.
- A long head start. Papzimeos has been selling for more than a year, so treating doctors already know it. Inovio must build a sales force for its first launch.
- Revenue momentum. Quarterly revenue went from $23.3 million in the first quarter to $55.0 million in the second, and the $71.6 million third-quarter estimate implies further growth before Voceryq reaches the market.
The risks
- Convenience can win share. If doctors favor a regimen with no surgery during dosing, Voceryq could take more share than the data alone suggest.
- Estimates will come down. The 2027 revenue estimate of $437 million assumed little competition. Cuts to those numbers can weigh on the shares for weeks, as our guide to estimate revisions explains.
- A single product. Nearly all of Precigen's revenue comes from Papzimeos, so any slowdown hits the whole company.
- Volatility. With about 28% of the float sold short, swings in either direction can be sharp. Our list of short interest data tools shows where to track that.
What comes next
Precigen reports third-quarter results and a business update on Wednesday, Nov 4. Watch Papzimeos revenue against the $71.6 million estimate, new patient starts, and anything management says about the competitive response. Our primer on FDA decision dates covers how these approvals are scheduled, and the rest of the day's swings are in today's biggest stock moves.
This is a view on direction over that window, not a recommendation to trade the stock.
