Nov 3, 2026: a premarket gap, a sharp dip at the open and a push to a new session high
Aehr closed at $51.47 on Nov 2, down 6.2% on the day for its third straight drop. After the close it posted results, and by 6:55pm the shares traded at $58.80. Premarket trading on Nov 3 ranged from $56.48 to $62.33, with the high at 9:10am. The stock opened at $57.14, fell to $54.01 within the first five minutes, then reversed. It reached $63.44 by 9:40am and was $62.56 at 9:46am, up 21.5%, on 2.0 million shares.
The move is a recovery as much as a breakout. The shares have traded between $50 and $66 since Oct 22, and the $62.56 price sits near where they traded on Oct 29, before two weak sessions into the report. After the move, RSI(14) stood at 43, the shares sat 24% below their 50-day average and 16% below their 200-day average, and volume ran 0.7 times its 20-day average with the session still young. They remain 58% below the 52-week high of $147.40.
What happened:
- A record quarter. Revenue of $33.0 million compares with $18.8 million in the quarter ended May 29 and $11.0 million a year earlier. Non-GAAP gross margin was 48.5%, up from 37.5%, on higher volume and product mix. Non-GAAP net income was $9.4 million, or $0.28 a share, against $0.2 million, or $0.01, a year earlier.
- Orders ran ahead of sales. Bookings of $46.7 million were more than four times the $11.4 million of a year earlier, a book-to-bill ratio of about 1.4. Backlog was $100.9 million at quarter end, up from $80.6 million at the end of fiscal 2026, and $8.4 million of orders arrived after the quarter closed.
- The outlook went up at the bottom. Fiscal 2027 revenue is now about $150 million, three times fiscal 2026. Non-GAAP net income is expected to be at least 20% of revenue, unchanged.
- A new large evaluation. A major supplier of AI accelerators, CPUs and network processors finished a benchmark and is buying a fully configured FOX-XP wafer-level test cell for an outsourced assembly and test partner in Taiwan, with installation planned for early calendar 2027 and a production decision expected several months after validation. CEO Gayn Erickson called it among the company's largest potential opportunities.
- The sector helped. FormFactor rose 9.9%, Cohu 8.5%, Onto Innovation 8.2% and Teradyne 4.6% at 9:46am. The semiconductor ETF SOXX rose 3.6% and Nvidia 3.1%, against 0.8% for the Nasdaq 100 fund QQQ. We found no news that explains the peers' gains.
What the numbers say
The revenue beat is large for a company this size, but the mix matters more than the headline. Consumables, meaning contactors, WaferPaks, burn-in modules and boards, were $13.5 million, or 41% of revenue, against $2.6 million, or 24%, a year earlier. These parts are used up as wafers are tested, so they come back as repeat orders, and management expects them to reach about 35% of fiscal 2027 revenue, up from 29% in fiscal 2026.
The outlook needs less than the first quarter suggests. A $150 million year after $33.0 million leaves $117 million for the last three quarters, about $39 million a quarter. That is only 18% above the first quarter's pace. CFO Chris Siu expects another strong second quarter on shipments to the lead hyperscale customer, and expects full-year gross margin near the first-quarter range, though the second quarter could be lower because of the Sonoma shipment mix. Erickson said revenue should rise over the remaining quarters but that order timing and shipment schedules can vary. For how outlook changes move stocks, see our guide to guidance changes.
Capacity is moving too. Sonoma shipments have started from an existing contract manufacturing site in Southeast Asia, adding room for more than 20 more systems a month, and Aehr signed a lease in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The company is debt-free, and appointed Vijay Rao, a technology executive with about 30 years of experience in hyperscale data centers, AI accelerators, memory and optical networking, to its board.
The bull case
- Backlog covers the year. Effective backlog of $109.3 million against $117 million still to ship leaves little to find from new orders, even allowing that some orders ship after June 2027.
- Customers are broadening. Management counts more than a dozen potential production customers across AI processors, silicon photonics, silicon carbide and gallium nitride, and added two gallium nitride production customers in six months.
- The second AI processor is larger. The lead hyperscale customer's second processor passed Sonoma qualification, and the customer expects higher volumes than for the first, with a ramp expected in calendar 2027.
- Estimates were low. The first-quarter estimate of $27.5 million was beaten by $5.5 million, and results like this tend to pull estimate revisions upward. The consensus price target is $132.50, with a range of $110 to $175, against a $62.56 stock.
- The base is low. The shares are 58% below the high, and a fall in the stock before the report meant less had to go right.
The risks
- Customer concentration. A handful of accounts still drive revenue, and growth depends on turning benchmarks into production orders. Qualification delays would push revenue out.
- Cash. Cash and restricted cash fell to $105.1 million from $116.5 million at May 29, and operating cash flow was negative $3.1 million, mostly for working capital and long-lead parts for expected AI demand.
- Valuation. The stock trades at about 41 times trailing sales and 9 times book value. On the $150 million outlook it is near 14 times sales, so the price needs the outlook to be met. See our explainer on price to sales.
- Margins. The second quarter could see a lower gross margin as Sonoma systems, which carry a different mix, ship in volume.
- Short interest and volatility. With 18% of the float short, a squeeze can lift the price quickly and fade just as fast. The stock fell 11.7% on Oct 6 and 6.2% on Nov 2.
- Sector dependence. If chip equipment stocks give back their gains, Aehr's move is likely to give back some too.
What comes next
The next dated test is the fiscal second-quarter report. A calendar estimate puts it on January 8, 2027, but Aehr has not announced a date. Watch bookings against the $33.0 million of first-quarter revenue, the gross margin against the 48.5% first-quarter level, and any update on the Taiwan test cell. Aehr also files its quarterly report with the SEC, which will give the first full cash flow and customer concentration detail.
