Oct 23, 2026: a beat and raise, a premarket pop, then a 13% slide from the high
Bloom reported after the close on Oct 22. The stock jumped to $226.77 at about 4:05pm, up 4.1%, then reversed as investors read the cash flow statement and traded down to $200.00 by about 4:50pm. It finished the evening near $202.84. Early on Oct 23 it traded as high as $226.83 at about 4:20am before sliding to $208.50 by 9:10am. It opened at $203.01, touched $206.00 in the first minutes, and fell to $189.00 at about 9:55am. At 11:56am it was $191.84 on 21.0 million shares, 1.5 times its 20-day average for a full day.
What pushed it down:
- Negative cash flow in a record quarter. Operating cash flow was negative $27.1 million, against $226.4 million in the second quarter. With $153.5 million of capital spending, three times the second quarter's $51.6 million, free cash flow was about negative $181 million, 24/7 Wall St. reported.
- Working capital ballooned. Contract assets rose to $792.8 million at Sept 30 from $178.9 million at Dec 31, inventories to $927.7 million from $643.3 million, and receivables to $634.7 million from $371.8 million.
- Management's answer did not settle it. CFO Simon Edwards said "the timing of large deliveries and related cash collections will vary from quarter to quarter," that the cash use is "not the beginning of a trend," and that Bloom is a "self-funding business." Management also said it plans more working capital investment and further expansion in Fremont.
- A crowded trade. The stock was up about 140% for the year before the report, 24/7 Wall St. noted, leaving room for a sharp reaction.
Other power and data center equipment names barely moved:

| S&P 500 fund (SPY) | $763.96 | $762.66 | -0.2% |
With peers flat, this is a Bloom-specific reaction to Bloom's own cash flow, not a sector selloff. Comfort Systems, another AI build-out supplier, also fell after a strong report on the same morning, as we cover in why Comfort Systems stock fell. More of the day's moves are in today's biggest stock moves.
After the drop, RSI(14) stood at 33, the shares sat 23% below their 50-day average and 13% below their 200-day average, and they were 45% below their 52-week high of $351.28.
The numbers
| Measure | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $1,235.8M | $519.0M |
| Product revenue | $1,073.6M | $384.3M (implied by 179.4% growth) |
| GAAP gross margin | 33.8% | 29.3% |
| GAAP operating income | $225.4M | $7.8M |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $0.94 | $0.15 |
| Operating cash flow | -$27.1M | n/a |
| Capital spending | $153.5M | $12.3M |
The 2026 outlook rose again. Revenue is now $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion, against $3.9 billion to $4.2 billion in July, non-GAAP operating income is $960 million to $1,030 million against $800 million to $900 million, and non-GAAP EPS is $3.10 to $3.40 against $2.55 to $2.85. The question the market is asking is how much of that will arrive as cash, and when. Our explainer on working capital shows why a jump in unbilled revenue matters, and how to read a cash flow statement walks through where the gap shows up.
The bull case
- Demand is not the issue. Product revenue rose 179.4%, driven by large data center and AI infrastructure deployments, and management said the backlog is "continuing to expand faster than our revenue."
- Margins keep rising. GAAP gross margin rose 453 basis points to 33.8%, and GAAP operating margin reached 18.2%.
- Cash on hand covers it. Bloom had $2.49 billion of cash at Sept 30, against $2.47 billion of recourse debt, so a quarter of negative cash flow is not a funding problem.
- Analysts stayed put. Morgan Stanley, RBC, BTIG, KeyBanc and Bernstein all kept their ratings on Oct 23, and the consensus target is about $292.
The risks
- Earnings without cash. Contract assets of $792.8 million are 64% of a quarter's revenue. If they are billed and collected in the fourth quarter, the worry fades. If they keep growing, the earnings quality question gets louder.
- Spending is rising. Capital spending tripled from the second quarter as Bloom builds capacity, and management plans more.
- Valuation. At about $56.5 billion of market value, the stock trades at roughly 57 times the midpoint of its 2026 operating income outlook and 59 times the midpoint of its EPS outlook.
- A cooling trade. AI infrastructure names with heavy spending have been under pressure all month, as our page on CoreWeave tracks.
What comes next
- Analyst target changes. Any cuts would show whether the Street accepts the timing explanation.
- Order and customer announcements. A named large order with payment terms would answer part of the cash question before the next report.
- The fourth-quarter report, expected around February 4, 2027. Watch operating cash flow, contract assets and inventory against revenue, and the first 2027 outlook. Our guide to preparing for an earnings report covers what tends to move a stock on the day.
