Oct 16, 2026: MSCI's index rules hit the stock, not bitcoin

The stock traded at $148.15 when premarket trading opened at 4am and drifted to $146.22 before the bell; Investing.com had it down about 3% premarket. It opened at $146.14, touched $146.83 in the first minutes and then fell for most of the morning. It hit $137.31, down 9.2%, at about 12:05pm and stood at $137.51 at 12:53pm. That put it down 10.9% for the week from its $154.34 close on Oct 9.

What pushed it down:

  • MSCI adopted the rules. After the Oct 15 close, The Block reported that MSCI will assess companies with a screen for operating assets and five financial ratios, replacing its interim limits on firms whose digital assets make up at least 50% of total assets. Investing.com reported that non-operating companies become ineligible after the close of November 30 and that MSCI will publish the final list of potentially affected companies on November 11.
  • Strategy is on the deletion list. MSCI named Strategy and Japan's Metaplanet as potential deletions, with SharpLink and other crypto treasury firms on a watchlist, per Investing.com.
  • Crypto stocks sold off together. At about 12:50pm:
Stock or fundChange
Strategy (MSTR)-9.1%
Cipher Digital (CIFR)-9.2%
Hut 8 (HUT)-8.9%
Riot Platforms (RIOT)-8.0%
CleanSpark (CLSK)-8.0%
DeFi Development (DFDV)-7.2%
SharpLink (SBET)-5.6%
Coinbase (COIN)-3.5%
iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT)-1.1%
Invesco QQQ (QQQ)-1.7%
  • No company news explained it. Strategy's only 8-K that morning, filed at 7:59am, set November dividends on STRC at a 12% annual rate. That is routine and does not touch the common stock.

Strategy fell about as much as the bitcoin miners, about eight times as much as the iShares Bitcoin Trust, and more than twice as much as Coinbase. The miners had their own reasons this week, including AI data center debt worries. For Strategy, the index ruling is the specific news.

After the drop, RSI(14) stood at 43, the shares sat 1.8% above their 50-day average and 1.3% above their 200-day average, volume of 13.3 million shares was 0.6 times its 20-day average, and the stock was 55% below its 52-week high of $306.16.

How big is the index problem?

Funds tracking MSCI's Global Investable Market Indexes hold about 13 million Strategy shares, 3.1% of basic shares outstanding, per Investing.com. Strategy says that is less than one day of trading volume, and CEO Phong Le has called the likely impact "immaterial," per Benzinga. JPMorgan has estimated about $2.8 billion of passive selling if Strategy is removed, per Investing.com. At $137.51, 13 million shares are worth about $1.8 billion; the JPMorgan figure was an earlier estimate at a different price.

The buffer is the main argument for the bulls. A current member is removed only if it fails the screen in both of its two most recent annual filing periods, according to The Block. Strategy has called MSCI's approach "discriminatory" and said in September that adoption would have "no meaningful impact on Strategy's business." For background on rule-driven events like this, see our guide to hard and soft catalysts.

The bitcoin, in numbers

As of Oct 11, Strategy held 848,250 bitcoin bought for $64.00 billion, an average of $75,444 each, per its Oct 12 release. At $81,321, those coins were worth about $69.0 billion, an unrealized gain of about $5.0 billion.

Bar chart comparing Strategy's bitcoin holdings of $68.98 billion with its common stock market value of $58.01 billion and enterprise value of $76.78 billion

Strategy's market value was about $58.0 billion, about 0.84 times its bitcoin. Counting debt and preferred stock, its enterprise value of $76.8 billion is about 1.11 times the bitcoin. These ratios are our calculations; Strategy publishes its own multiple on its website, which we could not open.

That discount matters because Strategy's model depends on selling common shares for more than the bitcoin behind them. Below that level, new share sales dilute holders. The filings show the change:

Week toBitcoin boughtSTRC bought backUSD Cash at end
Sep 130$139.3M$1.30B
Sep 20950$174.0M$1.05B
Sep 271,665$151.7M$1.00B
Oct 4334$176.3M$833.4M
Oct 11250$192.4M$640.5M

The Oct 4 row combines the Sep 28 to 30 and Oct 1 to 4 periods. Over five weeks, Strategy spent about $834 million buying back STRC and $268.6 million on bitcoin. Investing.com called the Oct 5 to 11 purchase its smallest weekly buy of 2026. STRC traded at $98.94 at midday, and Strategy has said it will keep the 12% rate until STRC trades steadily near $100.

The case for the stock

  • A large gain is coming in the report. Strategy estimated a $20.91 billion third-quarter gain on its digital assets and a $70.82 billion carrying value at Sep 30, per its Oct 5 filing. Results are due October 29.
  • The selling may be smaller than feared. If the 13 million share estimate holds, index funds would sell less than one day's average volume of about 22 million shares.
  • Analysts remain far higher. The analyst consensus target is $255.36, with a low of $155, above today's price. Short sellers held 7.3% of the float, a level our short interest guide explains.
  • A cash reserve covers payouts. The USD Reserve held $4.88 billion on Oct 11 to pay preferred dividends and interest.

The risks

  • Index removal. Losing MSCI membership would shrink the base of passive holders that must own the stock.
  • The funding gap. With the stock below its bitcoin, issuing common shares dilutes holders, and USD Cash has halved in four weeks.
  • Expensive preferred. STRC pays 12%, and the buybacks to support its price use cash that could buy bitcoin.
  • Bitcoin itself. The stock moves several times as much as the coin; the 52-week range is $81.81 to $306.16.

What comes next

  1. October 28: special meeting. Shareholders vote on paying preferred dividends daily.
  2. October 29: third-quarter results. Watch the cash balances and any plan for new capital below a 1.0 multiple. Our guide to preparing for an earnings report covers what moves a stock on the day.
  3. November 11: MSCI's final list. Whether Strategy is on it, and whether the buffer applies, decides the view.
  4. November 30: the rules take effect with MSCI's November review, when any index selling would happen.
